Lasting affect of parental fighting on sleeping patterns of their kids

Infants’ sleep patterns can be disrupted if their parents are constantly arguing, a new study finds.

Infants who heard regular blow-ups between parents when they were 9 months old continued to have troubled sleep patterns — marked by problems getting to sleep and staying asleep — even when they were 18-month-old toddlers.

More than 300 U.S. children and parents were stuydies, and all of the children were adopted at birth in order to control for any influence of genetics.

Superman Loses His Pants

For more than 70 years he has flown to the world’s rescue dressed in a trademark red cape, blue suit and startling tight red trunks worn outside his trousers. Superman, however, is about to lose his pants.

DC Comics, creators of the iconic superhero, are rebooting the Man of Steel franchise as part of an overhaul of their comic book empire, which will see all their titles starting again at issue No 1.

The move promises significant changes for DC’s superhero family – which includes Batman, Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern – with new characters, stories and, crucially, costumes in 52 new first editions, due out in September.

The most controversial style adjustment revealed on the cover of the “first edition”, due out in August, is the surprise scrapping of the red trunks that Superman has worn since he first appeared in June 1938.

Mark Zuckerberg’s 8th grade Graduation Speech

Mark Zuckerberg gave a speech at an 8th grade graduation Friday in Menlo Park.

The theme was how to overcome, “I can’t.”

There are 3 ways to do this, he says.

1.  Everything that’s worth doing takes hard work.  There are no short cuts.
2.  Focus on building great relationships.
3.  Do what you love.

Science Misconceptions

 Pop quiz: True or false?

     • The different cell types found in a given individual’s body contain different DNA.

     • Mountains form by the piling up of pieces of rock.

     • Some living parts of organisms are not made of cells.

More than half of the thousands of middle and high school students tested in nationwide examinations think the above statements are true (58 percent, 52 percent and 75 percent, respectively). They are not.

Altered patterns of gene expression offer new clues in autism.

Dr. Dan Geschwind, director of the Center for Autism Research and Treatment at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and his team recently measured levels of gene expression — which determine the synthesis of various proteins, each with a specific task in the cell — in the brain tissue of 19 autistic people and 17 healthy ones.

They discovered certain patterns of expression common to the autistic brain.

Autistic brains showed very little difference in gene expression between the frontal and temporal lobes, two regions responsible for language, decision-making and emotional responses.

Normally, marked differences in patterns of gene expression between these two areas begins in utero during fetal development.

Fined for paying in pennies

Vernal police cited Jason West with disorderly conduct on May 31, claiming he unnecessarily caused alarm when he unloaded 2,500 pennies onto a receptionist’s counter at Basin Clinic to settle his bill five days earlier.  Officers say the pennies were “strewn about the counter and the floor” and that West’s actions “served no legitimate purpose.”

Read the story, and an interview with Jason West below.

How Satanists View Death

A researcher from Concordia University recently published a journal article with some rare access to high level Satanists exploring what they think about death and dying.

in 1966 Anton LeVey founded the Church of Satan  in San Fransisco. He is also the author of the cannon for the group, The Satanic Bible first published in 1969.

Today, the church is based in New York:  http://www.churchofsatan.com/home.html

One of the main tenets of the faith is atheism. Not just a disbelief in God but also in the devil or Satan. Satanists believe God is an invention of man and instead deify themselves.

According to the official website of the Church of Satan: “We Satanists are thus our own ‘Gods,’ and as beneficent ‘deities’ we can offer love to those who deserve it and deliver our wrath (within reasonable limits) upon those who seek to cause us—or that which we cherish—harm.”
