Generating Power from Pig Feces

China’s love of pork presents a mountain of a problem for the environment, 1.4 million metric tons (1.5 million tons) of pig poo a year to be precise, but an Australian company believes it has part of the answer.

Why not turn the pig poo into power?

Using a bioreactor called “PooCareTM” and other technology, the pig manure is converted into biofuel for cooking and heating while the residual goes to farmers as nutrient-rich fertilizers.

“The benefits are energy and fuel for farmers as well as preventing further contamination of the environment,” said Ravi Naidu, chief scientist at CRC for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment (CRC Care), a South Australian-based firm involved in drawing up the technology.

“So it’s really a green technology from that perspective,” Naidu, a University of South Australia professor, told Reuters.

The process involves a bioreactor 30 m (98 ft) long, 10 m (33 ft) high and 4 m (13 ft) wide. It is set below ground and waste is fed through it slowly at a pre-determined temperature.

This converts solid waste into a biogas that is then pumped through gas tanks that can be delivered to the local community. The entire process takes about a month, with the first biogenerator already running at a farm in Wuhan, central China.

China has an estimated 700 million pigs, producing some two-thirds of the meat consumed there annually, so the scale of the problem can’t be underestimated.

Only one tenth of pig waste is used now as manure. It is estimated the nutrients lost in the waste of one pig alone are worth about A$50 ($52) per year. There is a vast disparity in rural and urban incomes with farmers earning around $75 per month.

The potential health hazards are worse.

“Pig waste contains a high level of nitrate, which in liquid form can contaminate ground water and in flake form can contaminate lakes, posing human health risks,” Naidu said.

Chinese scientists and Hong Kong-based technology firm HLM Asia Ltd also took part in developing the technology, which costs roughly A$35,000 ($36,400) for one bioreactor. Mass production would bring costs down, Naidu said.

Tupac Hologram Performance at Coachella

Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre brought Tupac Shakur back from the dead for a showstopping finale to the first Coachella weekend on Sunday night.

Shakur appeared as a hologram on the festival stage after a tribute performance of his hit California Love and the late star ‘teamed up’ with Snoop on Ain’t Nothin’ Like A Gangsta Party after an eerie solo rendition of Hail Mary from beyond the grave.

The ghostly apparition drew mixed reactions from those watching the set online, with one fan calling it “wrong on so many levels” and others stunned by the Tupac trick, tweeting, “WTF!”

But most rap fans were thrilled, including the stars in attendance. Katy Perry tweeted, “I think I might have cried when I saw Tupac,” while her pal Rihanna boasted: “Tupac back unbelievable.”

It was somewhat of a who’s who of rap, with Eminem, 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa and Kendrick Lamar joining them onstage, while Warren G teamed up with the hip-hop icons for a tribute to the late Nate Dogg and rap trio 213.

Premature Baby in Argentina Found Alive in Morgue Refrigerator 10 Hours After Being Pronounced Dead

One-week-old Luz Milagros Veron is Argentina’s miracle baby. Pronounced dead after her premature birth, the baby withstood more than 10 hours in a morgue refrigerator before being found alive.

“Today is the eighth day of my daughter’s resurrection,” the girl’s father, Fabian Veron, told CNN Wednesday.

Doctors at the Perrando Hospital in northeast Argentina can’t explain it, and every, doctor, nurse and morgue worker who dealt with the baby has been suspended as an investigation gets underway, officials said.

Luz Milagros remains in stable condition but she’s in intensive care, a health official said.

Analia Boutet, the baby’s mother, had given birth four times previously, and had recently suffered a miscarriage. This baby was born on April 3, three months early, and had no vital signs, hospital director Dr. Jose Luis Meirino told CNN.

The gynecologist on hand didn’t find any signs of life, so he passed the baby to a neonatal doctor who also didn’t find vital signs, Meirino said.

The doctors observed the baby for a while, and only then, pronounced her dead.

The hospital followed protocol, Meirino said.

Two morgue workers then put her body inside a little wooden coffin and placed it in the freezer.

“Up to that point, there were still no vital signs,” the hospital director said.

That night, Boutet began insisting on seeing her dead daughter’s body, Veron said.

She wanted to take a picture with her cell phone of the baby just as she lay, as a memory, the husband said.

It took some cajoling, but finally, hospital officials allowed the couple to visit the baby in the hospital morgue around 10 p.m., Veron said. As many as 12 hours had passed since the baby had been declared dead.

“They put the coffin on top of a stretcher and we looked for a little crowbar to open it because it was nailed shut,” Veron told a local television station. “It was nailed shut. I put the crowbar in there and started prying. I took a breath and took the lid off.”

Boutet approached the baby’s body, touched her hand, and heard a cry, Veron told CNN.

She jumped back. “It’s my imagination, it’s my imagination,” she repeated.

But the baby was alive, and crying.

Veron’s brother-in-law rushed the baby back to the neonatal ward. He clutched her close to his chest for warmth. She felt like an ice-cold bottle against his body, the relative told Veron.

“I can’t explain what happened. Only that God has performed a miracle,” Veron said.

His daughter was given a fresh, if precarious chance, and along with it, a new name.

She was going to be named Lucia, but after finding her alive, her parents said she would be Luz Milagros — the Spanish words for light and miracles.

In the meantime, an investigation has been launched at the hospital.

“I don’t have an explanation for what happened, but if there is culpability we’ll see what we’ll do,” Rafael Sabatinelli, deputy secretary of health in the Chaco region, told CNN.

“The personnel who were involved have responsibilities, and therefore, will have to be held accountable for their actions,” he said in a statement.

Both Sabatinelli and Meirino said it was the first time they had witnessed an incident like this, but that a nearly identical thing happened in Israel in 2008.

In that case, a baby was found alive in a morgue refrigerator after having been declared dead.

Some doctors at the time said that it was possible that the low temperatures inside the refrigerator had slowed down the baby’s metabolism and helped her survive. However, that baby later died.

Project Glass

Google says, “We think technology should work for you—to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don’t. A group of us from Google[x] started Project Glass to build this kind of technology, one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment. We’re sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input. So we took a few design photos to show what this technology could look like and created a video to demonstrate what it might enable you to do.”

Japanese Scientist Invents Safe Edible Burger From Human Feces

Mitsuyuki Ikeda, a researcher from the Environmental Assessment Center in Okayama has developed a new artificial meat burger made of human feces.

Ikeda has gathered sewage mud (which contains human feces) and has developed the artificial meat by adding fecal extracts, soy protein and steak sauce essence. Artificial food coloring to added to it to give it the same look as red meat. It is composed of 63 percent protein, 25 percent carbohydrates, 3 percent lipids and 9 percent minerals.

Protein is extracted from the sewage mud first. After the protein is extracted, “reaction enhancer” is added to it and it is then put in a machine called the “exploder” which produces the artificial meat. During the entire process, the bacteria in the sewage mud is rendered harmless as it is killed by heating.

The scientist is hoping that the new type of meat will one day replace real meat, which is more expensive to produce. He claims that the new feces burger is actually healthier than real meat (fecal meat has less fat and hence less calories) and is more environment-friendly (cows supposedly contribute around 18 percent of our greenhouse gas emissions).

Currently, fecal meat costs 10-20 times more than normal meat because of the cost of research, but ultimately Ikeda plans to bring the price down so that people can switch to feacl meat one day.

Ikeda did not say whether his “poop meat” is as tasty as real meat and he has acknowledged that few people would be keen to eat it.

Parents in shock as priest displays gay porn images

A PRIEST has denied knowing how gay porn images appeared on a screen during a presentation he was giving to parents of children preparing for First Communion.

Fr Martin McVeigh was setting up the PowerPoint display when the explicit sex scenes flashed up on the screen.

He was about to give a talk to the parents of First Communicants but abandoned the presentation after the pornographic images appeared.

One of those present said the pictures appeared on the screen after the priest put a USB memory stick into the computer at St Mary’s School in Pomeroy, Co Tyrone.

“There were plenty of shocked faces. There’s a lot of parents very angry about it.”

School principal Sean Devlin is understood to have contacted the Armagh diocese about the incident, which is being investigated by the diocese child protection office.

The Church authorities also went to the police, who said no crime had been committed.

The Archdiocese of Armagh has refused to say whether Fr McVeigh has been suspended from duties or had restrictions imposed on his position while the investigation is under way.

The priest himself insists the pornographic images can be “legitimately explained”.

He told the Ulster Herald newspaper he had no knowledge of how the images appeared on the computer.

A statement from Cardinal Sean Brady said: “The archdiocese immediately sought the advice of the PSNI who indicated that on the basis of the evidence available no crime had been committed.”

A spokeswoman for the Council of Catholic Maintained Schools said they were aware that the principal of the school “immediately referred this matter to the diocesan authorities in accordance with the diocesan safeguarding procedures”.

An emergency meeting was held in the parish last night.

Qatar Planning to Use Robot-Clouds to Keep Cool During 2022 FIFA World Cup

Qatar plans to implement UFO-style robot clouds which hover over stadiums to keep cool during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The bizarre solution is the brain-child of researchers at Qatar University who were trying to come up with a way of cooling temperatures.

Dr. Saud Ghani says the carbon fibre and solar panels would be around the size of a jumbo jet and automatically programmed to move as the sun moves in the sky

The helium gas-filled remote controlled clouds could then be used to hover over the stadium – lowering temperatures by 10 degrees.
