Thriving bacteria discovered at the deepest point in the ocean

Hollywood director James Cameron found little evidence of life when he descended nearly 11,000 metres to the deepest point in the world’s oceans last year. If only he had taken a microscope and looked just a few centimetres deeper.

Ronnie Glud at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, and his colleagues, have discovered unusually high levels of microbial activity in the sediments at the site of Cameron’s dive – Challenger Deep at the bottom of the western Pacific’s Mariana Trench.

Glud’s team dispatched autonomous sensors and sample collectors into the trench to measure microbial activity in the top 20 centimetres of sediment on the sea bed. The pressure there is almost 1100 times greater than at the surface. Finding food, however, is an even greater challenge than surviving high pressures for anything calling the trench home.

Any nourishment must come in the form of detritus falling from the surface ocean, most of which is consumed by other organisms on the way down. Only 1 per cent of the organic matter generated at the surface reaches the sea floor’s abyssal plains, 3000 to 6000 metres below sea level. So what are the chances of organic matter making it even deeper, into the trenches that form when one tectonic plate ploughs beneath another?

Surprisingly, the odds seem high. Glud’s team compared sediment samples taken from Challenger Deep and a reference site on the nearby abyssal plain. The bacteria at Challenger Deep were around 10 times as abundant as those on the abyssal plain, with every cubic centimetre of sediment containing 10 million microbes. The deep microbes were also twice as active as their shallower kin.

These figures make sense, says Glud, because ocean trenches are particularly good at capturing sediment. They are broad as well as deep, with a steep slope down to the deepest point, so any sediment falling on their flanks quickly cascades down to the bottom in muddy avalanches. Although the sediment may contain no more than 1 per cent organic matter, so much of it ends up at Challenger Deep that the level of microbial activity shoots up.

“There is much more than meets the eye at the bottom of the sea,” says Hans Røy, at Aarhus University in Denmark. Last year, he studied seafloor sediments below the north Pacific gyre – an area that, unlike Challenger Deep, is almost devoid of nutrients. Remarkably, though, even here Røy found living microbes.

“With the exception of temperatures much above boiling, bacteria seem to cope with everything this planet can throw at them,” he says.

London bar raided after selling whale skin cocktail

Cops swooped on the Nightjar bar in Hoxton, East London, where barmen were  serving the Moby Dick drink.

It contained Laphroaig whisky, Drambuie, ale, bitters and a “whale skin  infusion”.

The raid last week comes amid a Europe-wide ban on whale meat and products,  except under strict restrictions in Greenland and Denmark.

The Metropolitan Police were tipped-off in October that the bar was serving  whale skin illegally. The Met’s Wildlife Crime Unit and a UK Border Force  officer raided the premises on December 3.

A police spokesman said: “One item from the premises was seized. This has  been  sent for analysis.”

No arrests have been made at the Nightjar, which describes itself on its  website as “a hidden slice of old-school glamour”. Its drinks range from £9  to £17 a glass.

Bar bosses said it had been unaware the drink contained an illegal ingredient  until the raid and has removed the drink from sale.

Nightjar director Edmund Weil said: “We did have a drink on this year’s menu  which included a small amount of scotch whisky infused with a single 2 x 5cm  strip of dried whale skin.

“The strip was purchased in a shop by an employee while on a trip to Japan in  autumn 2011.

“Until the police visit, neither ourselves nor our employees were aware of  the  legislation under which the bottle was seized.

“In hindsight we realise that regardless of the legal framework around such  products, it was an error of judgement on our part to include this on our  menu, and we would like to offer our apologies to anyone who may have been  offended by it.

“We have removed the drink entirely from our menu, which will be reprinted  before Monday to reflect this.”

Native Greenlanders who use whales as subsistence food are the only Europeans  allowed to kill or to eat them in strictly limited amounts.

Student’s sex-tape plays at graduation

 

A student in Denmark shared much more about his high school experience with his family and friends than he anticipated last week, when a videotape of him having sex was played during his school’s graduation festivities.

The X-rated clip of the student having sex with a woman began to play in a video presentation celebrating the graduates of the Gammel Hellerup Gymnasium school near Copenhagen, shocking the 400 to 500 people in the crowd.

“It started with some pictures of them and you thought it was fun. But it then turned into a sex video,” a student told Danish website Politiken. “Everyone was shocked – but no-one turned it off. It was clearly too much and the 30 seconds the film lasted, felt a very long time.”

Parasite in cat litter may increase risk of suicide

 

Women infected with the common cat parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which lurks in litter boxes, may suffer undetected brain changes that lead to personality changes and even mental illness. That’s according to a new study of more than 45,000 women in Denmark published Monday in the Archives of General Psychiatry. The parasite, excreted in cat feces, also spreads through undercooked meat and unwashed vegetables. Pregnant women have long been warned to avoid the parasite, because they can pass it onto their fetus, causing brain damage or stillbirth. In the new study, researchers found that women infected by T. gondii were one and a half times more likely to try to take their own lives than those who were not affected. They were also more likely to try to commit suicide violently—with a gun, sharp object, or by jumping, Time reports. Suicide risk increased with the levels of T. gondii antibodies found. “We can’t say with certainty that T. gondii caused the women to try to kill themselves, but we did find a predictive association between the infection and suicide attempts later in life that warrants additional studies,” study author Teodor Postolache, an associate professor of psychiatry and director of the Mood and Anxiety Program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, said in a press statement.
