Utah Professor Grant Smith Arrested for Watching Child Pornography on Flight

A University of Utah professor, arrested over the weekend for allegedly viewing child pornography on his laptop during a flight, will be arraigned on Monday in a Boston court.

Police arrested Grant D. Smith, 47, on Saturday when a Delta Airlines flight from Salt Lake City landed at Boston’s Logan Airport.

A passenger tipped off authorities that Smith was using his laptop to view images of child pornography while a passenger in the first class section of the plane, the Massachusetts State Police said.

CNN affiliate WCVB said a passenger took a cellphone photo of Smith allegedly watching the video.

“The notion that someone would be so bold as to view it in public is extraordinary and I’m not sure what the explanation is,” victim’s advocate, Wendy Murphy, told the station.

The Daily Utah Chronicle, the University of Utah’s student newspaper, said Smith is a professor of material science and engineering at the university.

In a statement to the newspaper, the university said Smith has been placed on administrative leave pending a criminal investigation.

“Professor Smith deserves a full and fair investigation into this issue,” the statement said. “The University of Utah, however, has no tolerance for the viewing or possessing of child pornography by any of its employees, regardless of where it occurs.”

The university added that Smith will be fired if the allegations prove true.

Early Monday morning, Smith remained in jail on a $15,000 bond. He has been charged with possession of child pornography.

2 Georgia Female Caregivers Arrested for Water-Boarding 89 Year Old Woman

Police in Clayton County have accused two women of holding down a sick 89-year-old woman and waterboarding her.

The arrest warrants paint an ugly picture on how two care-givers treated 89-year-old Anna Foley, who suffered from dementia.

It allegedly happened at an elderly care facility on Mount Zion Boulevard in Jonesboro back in 2008 — and it’s unbelievable how police said it all started.

The arrest warrants said Jermeller Steed and Cicely Reed engaged in an argument with Foley over ice cream and locked her in a shower room, held her down against her will using a shower curtain and held her wrists and arms.

It goes on to say they sprayed water in Foley’s face with a shower nozzle, purposely obstructing her breathing, in a manner similar to waterboarding.

Waterboarding is what the Obama administration has banned the government from using against suspected terrorists, but Clayton County authorities said that’s what the two women used.

A co-worker who witnessed the horrifying ordeal blew the whistle.

The two accused women no longer work at the adult care facility.

Black Friday Shoppers in West Virginia Walk Over and Around Dying Man in Target

Family and friends were stunned by the loss of a West Virginia man who died while shopping on Black Friday as fellow bargain hunters reportedly walked around — and even over — the man’s body.

Family members told WSAZ-TV that 61-year-old Walter Vance of Logan County, W. Va., had become ill and collapsed while shopping for Christmas decorations inside Target in South Charleston. He later died after being taken to the hospital, family said.

Witnesses told the NBC News affiliate in Charleston, W. Wa., that shoppers walked around and even over Vance’s body.

“Where is the good Samaritan side of people?” Vance’s co-worker and friend Sue Compton told WSAZ. “How could you not notice someone was in trouble? I just don’t understand if people didn’t help what their reason was, other than greed because of a sale.”

Pakistani Woman Kills and Tries to Cook Her Husband

A Pakistani woman is being held on suspicion of killing her husband, cutting him up and trying to cook the pieces, Karachi police said Friday.

Zainab Bibi, 32, was arrested in connection with the murder Tuesday of her husband Ahmad Abbas, police said.

Her 22-year-old nephew, Zaheer Ahmed, is accused of helping Bibi stab Abbas to death and carve his body into small pieces.

Police said she wanted to cook her husband’s body parts so she could dispose of them without being caught.

Neighbors raised the alert when they detected a foul odor in the neighborhood, police said.

Pakistan’s domestic satellite channel ARY News spoke to Bibi in the police station where she is being held in the southern city of Karachi.

In an interview broadcast late Thursday, she claimed to have killed her husband because he wanted a physical relationship with their daughter — and said she did not regret her actions.

“I killed my husband before he dared to touch my daughter,” she told ARY News.

Florida Woman Arrested for Posing as a Doctor and Injecting Woman’s Buttocks with Fix-A-Flat

A Miami Gardens transgender woman is facing charges of practicing medicine without a license after police say she injected a patient’s rear with everything but the kitchen sink in an illegal cosmetic surgery procedure.

Oneal Ron Morris, 30, was arrested Friday after an investigation by Miami Gardens Police and the Florida Department of Health.

According to police, the victim saw Morris in May and was injected in her buttocks with a substance consisting of cement, “Fix a Flat,” mineral oil and super glue.

The amateur incision was then sealed with super glue, police said. The victim was later hospitalized with a serious medical condition as a result of the injections.

Morris, who police say is a man but appears to look like a woman and sports an apparently enhanced rear herself in arrest photos, was being held on $7,500 bond. it was unknown whether she has an attorney.

Police believe there may be other victims of Morris who may be afraid to come forward. They said the victims haven’t done anything illegal and shouldn’t be afraid to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami Gardens Police at 305-474-1420.

Fox News Viewers Know Less About News Than People Who Don’t Watch Any News

Fox News viewers are less informed than people who don’t watch any news, according to a new poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

The poll surveyed New Jersey residents about the uprisings in Egypt and the Middle East, and where they get their news sources. The study, which controlled for demographic factors like education and partisanship, found that “people who watch Fox News are 18-points less likely to know that Egyptians overthrew their government” and “6-points less likely to know that Syrians have not yet overthrown their government” compared to those who watch no news.

Overall, 53% of all respondents knew that Egyptians successfully overthrew Hosni Mubarak and 48% knew that Syrians have yet to overthrow their government.

Dan Cassino, a political science professor at Fairleigh Dickinson, explained in a statement, “Because of the controls for partisanship, we know these results are not just driven by Republicans or other groups being more likely to watch Fox News. Rather, the results show us that there is something about watching Fox News that leads people to do worse on these questions than those who don’t watch any news at all.”

This isn’t the first study that has found that Fox News viewers more misinformed in comparison to others. Last year, a study from the University of Maryland found that Fox News viewers were more likely to believe false information about politics.

Stuck Up!

It is, therefore, both exhilarating and instructive to look at some of the pictures from a new book called “Stuck Up.”

This tome for our ages (but not necessarily all ages) features 100 X-rays that have revealed strange objects perched inside people’s bodies.

As the Huffington Post displays it, people do end up going to hospital with iPods inside them. Cassette tapes, too. Although the latter are, according to the three doctors who created this book, a little more rare these days.

“I think that shows that the choice of objects that are inserted reflects the larger culture,” said Marty A. Sindhian, M.D. (a pseudonym).

Outrage at Orange County’s Crystal Cathedral

An email was sent out to members of the Crystal Cathedral congregation in Orange County requesting meals for founder Robert H. Schuller’s wife Arvella, who is ill with pneumonia.  The request was that meals for the reverend’s wife be dropped off at the cathedral’s Tower of Hope where the Schullers’ limo drivers will be waiting to pick them up at the designated time.

Member Bob Canfield says he was outraged when he got the message.

“These are millionaires who have limos and chauffeurs,” he said. “Why in God’s name would they want the congregants to deliver meals? It’s ludicrous.”

The email states that the Schullers do not want get-well cards sent because they would like to “keep her situation under the radar.”

“However, they would appreciate meals over the next three to four weeks,” the email states. “They are to be sent to the church in order to be transported to Arvella. The limo drivers could pick up the dinners or meet in the Tower Lobby around 4:30 p.m.”

The message also requests that the meals be low in sodium and include items such as fruit, meats, soup and egg dishes such as quiches.

Foreclosure Law Firm Holds Halloween Party Making Fun of Foreclosed-Upon People

These are picures from last year’s Halloween party at the law firm of Steven J. Baum .  The firm, which is located near Buffalo, is what is commonly referred to as a “foreclosure mill” firm, meaning it represents banks and mortgage servicers as they attempt to foreclose on homeowners and evict them from their homes. Steven J. Baum is the largest such firm in New York; it represents virtually all the giant mortgage lenders, including Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo.

These pictures were provided anonymously to the NYT by a former employee, who said that the snapshots are an accurate representation of the firm’s mind-set. “There is this really cavalier attitude,” she said. “It doesn’t matter that people are going to lose their homes.” Nor does the firm try to help people get mortgage modifications; the pressure, always, is to foreclose.”
