Inmate Altered Vermont Police Decals to Contain a Pig

Vermont State Police Sgt. Michael Roy noticed something odd on a decal on his police car: One of the spots on the cow in the state seal had taken on the shape of a pig. Investigation found that it had been that way for several years; a prison inmate-artist had changed the insignia on the prison-made decals. Authorities initially responded that they would hunt down all the altered decals. “It’s going to be ‘Where’s Porky?’ instead of ‘Where’s Waldo?'” said an ex-cop turned state legislator; they guess there may be about 60 in circulation. Replacing them will cost taxpayers $13 per decal. What, if anything, it costs the offender may depend on whether he’s still inside and thus subject to prison discipline. “I don’t know if there is a criminal charge,” said the state corrections commissioner.

The investigation is now closed. It was determined that the alteration was made in November 2009 by an unknown female inmate at a prison work center in Windsor, Vermont.

“At this point all we can tell is how many women had access to the file, and who they were,” said Corrections Commissioner Andy Pallito. “Really being able to tell who manipulated the file last is virtually impossible without somebody stepping forward and saying ‘I did it’.”

At least one resident is campaigning for the state police to keep the altered decal as official.

“It is a really good opportunity for us to band together as Vermonters and show that we can have a laugh in a little bit of an awkward situation,” says Cid Sinclair, who has created a Facebook group, Save the Vermont Pigs. Well over 1,000 people have “Liked” the page. Sinclair has also created a petition to demand that the governor adopt the decal, rather than spend tax money to fix it. Hundreds have signed.

He has the backing of Lt. Governor Phil Scott, at least. He “loves” the idea, and says the prisoner’s alteration was “disrespectful,” but “We cannot let them win and if you let it bother you then they’ve won.”

ACLU Lawsuit Against Obama Administration Over Assassination of American Citizens

The ACLU Wednesday filed a lawsuit against various agencies of the Obama administration — the Justice and Defense Departments and the CIA — over their refusal to disclose any information about the assassination of American citizens. In October, the ACLU filed a FOIA request demanding disclosure of the most basic information about the CIA’s killing of 3 American citizens in Yemen: Anwar Awlaki and Samir Khan, killed by missiles fired by a U.S. drone in September, and Awlaki’s 16-year-old son, Abdulrahman, killed by another drone attack two weeks later.

The ACLU’s FOIA request sought merely to learn the legal and factual basis for these killings — meaning: tell us what legal theories you’ve adopted to secretly target U.S. citizens for execution, and what factual basis did you have to launch these specific strikes? The DOJ and CIA responded not only by refusing to provide any of this information, but refused even to confirm if any of the requested documents exist; in other words, as the ACLU put it yesterday, “these agencies are saying the targeted killing program is so secret that they can’t even acknowledge that it exists.” That refusal is what prompted Wednesday’s lawsuit (in December, the New York Times also sued the Obama administration after it failed to produce DOJ legal memoranda “justifying” the assassination program in response to a FOIA request from reporters Charlie Savage and Scott Shane, but the ACLU’s lawsuit seeks disclosure of both the legal and factual bases for these executions).

United States Marines Urinating on Bodies of Afghan People They Killed

The video, posted on YouTube and other websites, shows four men in camouflage Marine combat uniforms urinating on three corpses. One of them jokes: “Have a nice day, buddy.” Another makes a lewd joke.

President Hamid Karzai’s government “strongly condemned” the video and called the actions by American soldiers “insulting” and “insane.”

“The Islamic republic of Afghanistan is demanding the investigation and punishment for the solders from the U.S. government regarding this film as soon as possible,” the presidential palace says in a statement released Thursday.

Thieves Arrested After they Pocket Dial 911

Police in Wisconsin’s capital city barely had to try to catch a pair of unlucky suspected thieves.

Madison police say two men in their late 20s stole DVDs and computer games from a Target store Tuesday and discussed their plans to fence the goods while driving away.

Investigators say the duo didn’t realize one of them had accidentally pocket-dialed 911. A dispatcher listened in for nearly an hour as they discussed what they had stolen and where they might sell it. Police say they even described their vehicle.

Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain says the pair decided to sell their goods at a video store. When they pulled into the store’s parking lot, officers surrounded their vehicle with guns drawn.

5 and 7 year old Boys Kill Hardened Criminal in India

In a seemingly bizarre incident, two children, aged 5 and 7, hacked a hardened criminal to death in Pilibhit district and then marched to the nearby police station to confess their crime. This incident took place on Sunday evening in Piparaiya village. The boys were playing in the orchard where their father works as a guard.

The children apparently saw the criminal, Mahendra, and thought he was there to steal the fruits in the orchard. The boys, according to reports, asked Mahendra to leave the orchard or else they would call their father. Mahendra did not take the call seriously and the boys, it seems, picked up a sickles lying nearby and attacked the criminal. They kept attacking until Mahendra slumped to the ground. The boys, in their blood soaked clothes, went to the police station and innocently told the cops, “Humne Mahendra ko maar dala (We killed Mahendra).”

Initially, the cops presumed that the boys were joking but after some time when other villagers confirmed the incident, they decided go to the site of the incident where they found the body of Mahendra.

“It sounds unbelievable that such young boys, who cannot even express themselves clearly, could kill such a hardcore criminal. It seems that Mahendra was intoxicated and could not retaliate since it seems impossible that the boys would kill a grown up man with such force that he dies on the spot,” said a senior police official. The boys are too young to be kept in juvenile home and it is the court that will decide the case.

Man Tries to Mug Professional Fighter

The life of a mugger is a risky one, and not just because you’ve chosen a career path that will most likely end when you get arrested and tossed in jail.  No, holding strangers up for their valuables may be hazardous because there’s always that chance that you’re going to pick the wrong victim to rob and end up on the receiving end of a few well-placed fists of steel belonging to an MMA fighter.

Pictured is the bruised and battered face of Anthony Miranda, a Chicagoan and the alleged mugger who chose the absolute worst person to try and hold up when he attempted to rob a gentleman known only as Justin from Des Plaines, who also happens to be a 6-foot-2, 250-pound MMA fighter.

The incident occurred in Chicago’s Southwest Side this past Friday night, when, while sitting in his car, Justin was approached by Miranda who asked the soon-to-be victim for a light for his cigarette.  Things turned felonious when Miranda allegedly pulled a gun and demanded cash, Justin’s phone and keys, and got intense when the $30 Justin gave him didn’t suffice, and Miranda ordered the MMA expert out of the car at gunpoint.

Right about then the tables were turned, and things went wrong for the 24-year-old Miranda.  Terribly, terribly wrong.

From the Chicago Sun Times

Justin said he looked at the man facing him, pistol pointing at his chest, and was pretty certain he was about to take a bullet.

“I wasn’t scared because I’m trained,” Justin explained.

Justin then demonstrated to a reporter the sudden, rather effective maneuver that disarmed his attacker.

“The round went off,” Justin continued. “I put him down to the ground. He was fighting. He didn’t want to give up.”

But at the same time, Justin said: “He was begging me to let him go. He said he has a baby.”

Justin then kept his attacker collared until police arrived.

For the record, the round that went off ended up in Miranda’s lower leg.  So instead of a handful of cash and a cell phone, the mugger has a hole in his ankle, a total mess where his face used to be, and, if he keeps going the way he is, a kid that won’t have a father around to help raise him.

Police in England Lure and Capture Wanted Criminal With Fake Promise of Free Beer

Undercover officers at Derbyshire police sent letters to dozens of people who had evaded arrest asking them to ring a marketing company to collect a free crate of beer.

A total of 19 suspects fell for the hoax and called the number on the letter, which put them through to police officers based at Chesterfield Police Station.

They were told that they needed to arrange a date and time for the free alcohol to be dropped off at an agreed address.

But instead of being handed free ale the wanted men found themselves confronted by police, handcuffed and under arrest.

Chief Inspector Graham McLaughlin, who is leading the sting known as Operation Rocky, said: “These suspects are people who have managed to evade arrest for some time so we have used different tactics to find them.

“It has been very cost effective as it can take a lot of time and money to track people down.

“We use a variety of methods to arrest those suspected of committing criminal offences and we will continue to use new tactics when necessary.”

Alleged offences committed by some of those arrested range from burglary and robbery to a serious sexual assault.

Utah Professor Grant Smith Arrested for Watching Child Pornography on Flight

A University of Utah professor, arrested over the weekend for allegedly viewing child pornography on his laptop during a flight, will be arraigned on Monday in a Boston court.

Police arrested Grant D. Smith, 47, on Saturday when a Delta Airlines flight from Salt Lake City landed at Boston’s Logan Airport.

A passenger tipped off authorities that Smith was using his laptop to view images of child pornography while a passenger in the first class section of the plane, the Massachusetts State Police said.

CNN affiliate WCVB said a passenger took a cellphone photo of Smith allegedly watching the video.

“The notion that someone would be so bold as to view it in public is extraordinary and I’m not sure what the explanation is,” victim’s advocate, Wendy Murphy, told the station.

The Daily Utah Chronicle, the University of Utah’s student newspaper, said Smith is a professor of material science and engineering at the university.

In a statement to the newspaper, the university said Smith has been placed on administrative leave pending a criminal investigation.

“Professor Smith deserves a full and fair investigation into this issue,” the statement said. “The University of Utah, however, has no tolerance for the viewing or possessing of child pornography by any of its employees, regardless of where it occurs.”

The university added that Smith will be fired if the allegations prove true.

Early Monday morning, Smith remained in jail on a $15,000 bond. He has been charged with possession of child pornography.

Pakistani Woman Kills and Tries to Cook Her Husband

A Pakistani woman is being held on suspicion of killing her husband, cutting him up and trying to cook the pieces, Karachi police said Friday.

Zainab Bibi, 32, was arrested in connection with the murder Tuesday of her husband Ahmad Abbas, police said.

Her 22-year-old nephew, Zaheer Ahmed, is accused of helping Bibi stab Abbas to death and carve his body into small pieces.

Police said she wanted to cook her husband’s body parts so she could dispose of them without being caught.

Neighbors raised the alert when they detected a foul odor in the neighborhood, police said.

Pakistan’s domestic satellite channel ARY News spoke to Bibi in the police station where she is being held in the southern city of Karachi.

In an interview broadcast late Thursday, she claimed to have killed her husband because he wanted a physical relationship with their daughter — and said she did not regret her actions.

“I killed my husband before he dared to touch my daughter,” she told ARY News.
